Sherman (Hoke) Jeffrey, 74-year-old retired brick mason and former businessman here died at noon Friday in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Charlene Retzolk of Urbana Il after an illness of 9 weeks. A native of Shannondale, he was born Sept 25, 1891 to William and Mary Baldwin Jeffrey. He was married in 1908 in Crawfordsville to Azalia Burk, who died 34 years ago Sunday. Mr. Jeffrey was a member of the Jackson St. Christian Church in Muncie where he lived 3 years and was employed at a foundry. He was a charter member of the Moose Lodge here. He gained a wide reputation as a fast bricklayer. Mr. Jeffrey laid brick for streets in Crawfordsville and also at Benton Harbor among several Michigan communities. For a time Mr. Jeffrey owned & operated the West Side Auto Parts firm in Crawfordsville. In recent years he was employed at the city sewage plant & municipal airport. Surviving besides the daughter are 5 sons; Carl of Sioux City, Iowa; George E. William H and Lewis C. of Crawfordsville and Julian S. of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Howard and Mrs. Elsie Grizzle of Martinsville and 17 grandchildren and 18 greats. Six brothers and 3 sisters preceded Mr. Jeffrey in death. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Monday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Saturday., Rev. John Servies assisted by Rev. Howard F. Miller will officiate and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. - typed by kbz
